The woman who loves always smells good


I have talked about all sorts of wedding details that some brides probably haven't even thought about. Nail color. Facials. And now, perfume!

Seriously though, do you know what you want to wear on your wedding day?

One of my bridesmaids, Shena, gave me this wonderful gift for my birthday. It's the
Sephora Scent Sampler. Filled with many samples, the recipient can try them each out. When you find your favorite, you bring in the voucher to the store for a full size bottle. Is that not genius?



As much as I loved the idea, I am tied to the idea of a "signature scent." I have always said that when I am older (very vague and not quite defined) that I will start wearing Coco by Chanel. I love the way it smells. Ultimately, I decided to hold off on starting to wear this perfume.

Switch over from what? Tresor by Lancome is the perfume that I have worn for the past 15 years. My husband loves it. I have friends tell me that whenever they smell Tresor, they always think of me. It makes me happy.

Although, I know that it is "in" to change scents for different occasions, seasons, etc., it is my thing. However, after a quick google search, I can see that I am not the only one that wants a signature scent.
A recent Honey Bee Weddings bride wore her favorite perfume, Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir. She mixed it with Orange Blossom, a tradition for brides in France. Her plan is to wear the perfume on every anniversary. It's a sweet (although expensive) tradition.


Regardless of what you decide to wear, just make sure that you love it!

Meet Snow + Graham

Pulp & Ink is having my favorite stationers, Snow & Graham, for an in store appearance in conjunction with the Old Town Art Fair. I saw this and starting jumping for joy.

If you aren't obsessed with paper and have never heard of Snow & Graham, the company creates THE most lovely paper in the world. Literally, it makes me weak in the knees. And I can always spot a Snow & Graham design. I immediately saw some gorgeous new items on my recent trip to New Orleans.

Instead, we both gave from the heart. I look to the past, he looked to the future.

I gave Denton a pair of cuff links.  Why cuff links?  Before we were dating (and just co-workers), Denton bought me a techie gift. Basically, it was a cord to allow my Treo to connect to my laptop that syncs and charges, all at the same time.  Smitten, I felt the need to give him a gift as well.  I had a two pairs of identical DKNY cuff links that came with the identical shirts.  Although they are nothing special, he wore them on our wedding day.  The pair I gave him for our anniversary were purple and black, very modern and very Denton.

Denton gave me a tote bag.  Why a tote bag?  I have needed a new laptop bag for ages.  However, he was thinking to the future because he said "it will convert into a stylish diaper bag".  Seriously, I don't know if I have been so happy to receive such a gift!  Like any great gift, it wasn't the present itself but the thought behind it.  We've been talking about having a baby next year and the idea of having something to prepare just thrills me!  
We had a blissfully happpy anniversary.  Sadly, I am a newlywed no more.

Off to New Orleans

Our one year anniversary is this weekend.  I can't believe that a year has past since our wedding day!

We are heading to New Orleans to celebrate.  Although the city is mostly known for the debauchery of Bourbon Street, I think the city can be quite romantic.  It's my favorite city in the States but Denton has never been!  I'll be back on Tuesday!

My New Favorite Blog

As you already know, etiquette is one of my favorite topics.  Regardless of everything else that defines you (where you live, your profession, or your income) everyone should strive to have good manners and be a gracious host.  

I find Emily Post to my my personal inspiration.  Then you can only imagine my excitment when The Emily Post Institute started a blog!  It's a wonderful daily read for all of those questions that you have about etiquette.

Ask the Bee: Tables + Guests * Centerpieces = HELP

How many guests can I fit at each table?

It depends on the size of the table.  My personal favorite is a 60" round with 8 guests.  The table is a nice size for intimate conversation and there is enough room for everyone to feel comfortable.  

Since it is not always possible to break up your guest list in groups of 8, I recommend a 72" round for 10 guests. This is a comfortable seating arrangement that so that guests are not "elbow to elbow". Remember, there is going to be a lot on each tabletop! Besides the centerpiece, that for each guest, there is a charger, menu, napkin, several glasses (champagne flute, white wine glass, red wine glass, and water glass), flatware, bread plate, and possibly a place card. Below is a photo of a 60" round set for 8 guests.  As you can see, there is already a lot on the table before guests arrive with escort cards, cameras and handbags!

On a budget?  Seat 12 guests at a 72" round to get the most bang for your buck in terms of centerpieces.  Be sure not to crowd the table with elaborate centerpieces.  I would also recommend putting the favors on the escort table in stead of at each place setting.

Ask the Bee: Should I Invite Her?

I have a quick question about etiquette...it's probably a dumb question, but...I sent a Save the Date card to a friend of mine, with whom I've rarely spoken.  Because I sent her a Save the Date card, should I still invite her to the wedding, even though we no longer have a friendship?

In a word, yes. 

Sending a save the date is a type of invitation. It's an invitation to Save the Date for an invitation that will be forth coming. The It's an invitation to save the date for an invitation that will be forth coming. It is just as rude as dis-inviting someone from a party.

Real Wedding: Colleen + Nathan's Reception

Yesterday, I posted about Colleen and Nathan's ceremony.  Today, it is about the reception.

I have yet to see more beautiful escort cards. Each escort card was actually a book. The front page had the name of the couple and the back cover was the number of the table.
All cards went into this bird cage that fit perfectly with the venue.
The candle law library was gorgeous. Guests were pleasantly surprised when they saw the space.  It was transformed into something else.  One amazing detail of the venue is the built-in banquettes.  Guests really enjoyed this seating!
The long rectangular tables were adorned with a runner, hand-made table numbers, and flowers in julep cups with lots and lots of candles.  It was beautiful!

The menus highlighted the couple's monogram and color pallete.
Children were greeted with a fun place setting: coloring book with crayons.
The couple opted not to have a head table.  They highlighted their seats with signs.
The cocktail hour took place in the same space as the reception.  Guests mingled on the dance floor while getting drinks from the luxurious built-in bar.

Playing off the Library theme, the couple had the guests write advice on Library Cards.
Nothing says dessert like a tower of cupcakes!

Real Wedding: Colleen + Nathan, The Day

When I met Colleen for an initial consultation, we talked for almost two hours.  Seriously.  It was like finding a fellow kindred soul. After about an hour and a half, her fiance, Nathan, walked in.  It turns out that we used to work together! We have even more in common that that:  we were fellow bloggers.  Colleen writes The Everyday Bride.  The final tip that made me feel, without being too presumptuous, that I was destined to do this wedding was that the officiant that marrying the couple performed at my first wedding.  I'm happy to report that Colleen felt the same way.  She booked me almost immediately and then wrote this amazing review.

On her wedding day, Colleen was really calm and yet very excited.   When you walk into a hotel suite filled with a bridal party, you never know what to expect.  Her room, which was a fabulous suite at the W in the City Center, was filled with her bestest friends and sister, all of whom were in a wonderful mood.  It was so gorgeous and massive that the couple opted to have guests swing by the next day for a farewell brunch.

The day went perfectly.  There wasn't one hiccup, even a tiny one.  I was relieved because I knew that a detailed bride like Colleen would have noticed.  She was able to concentrate on the most important thing of the day, her love for Nathan.

Colleen picked luxurious accessories that complimented her beautiful dress.  An embroidered 'something blue' hanker chief with some fabulous gold shoes and a simple veil.
 Colleen remembered her beautiful Mother by having a locket tied to her bouquet.
Colleen took some photos with her girls at the W before heading to the church.
There is something beautiful about an evening ceremony.  
Holy Family is a gorgeous gothic church especially in the evening.
One of the unique components of the ceremony was a candle lighting.  
Every guest received a candle when they walked into church.  
The entire church was filled with candlelight.  It was beautiful on a November early evening night.
Father Jerry performed the wedding ceremony of my very first wedding!  Rather than turn their backs to the crowd, Colleen and Nathan turned toward their guests so that they could witness the couple exchange vows.

To Keep or Not To Keep?

Are you going to keep your maiden name?  It's a big decision for every bride.  

I was adamant that I would keep my name. At 31, I felt that I had been "Misse Daniel" for way too long to become "Melissa Jacobs".  I did consider using both names (hyphenating without the hyphenate) because I love the way our last names sound together.  That said, I opted to keep my name.  

I would more open to changing my name if the term "nee" was still around.  Nee?  It is a term used (pronounced "nay") that was used to indicate a maiden name e.g. "Michelle Obama nee Robinson".  I think it is a wonderful way to keep both names.  Plus, it could fit on a business card.  Here is a wiki post.
