musings #9

I read somewhere online that if you are still following your New Year's Resolutions by February 8th, you will more than likely make it to the end of the year.  I am not sure if that is true but I really believe in New Year Resolutions.

While I have been making New Year Resolutions since I was a teen, I started to make monthly goals this year. Bing sent me these amazing cards so that you can create ten monthly goals each month.

Thanks Bing!

I saw this photo of Kerry Washington and loved her magenta Kotur clutch...partly because it looks so much like my Milly Kendra clutch.  The styles are super similar but my Milly clutch is half the price!

Attending ALT Summit was amazing.  I am going to do a full blog post next week on the conference.  It was such a wonderful opportunity to be in the same room with 700+ other creative types.  Here is one of my favorite quotes from the Thursday key note speaker, Garance DorĂ© .

I love paper and one of my favorite brands is Sugar Paper.  Sugar Paper did a collaboration last year with Target.  It was hard to find as it was limited to only a few stores.  I really wanted the fuschia casebound planner because the designers used the most amazing fonts.  There were two at my local Target but both damaged.

So you can imagine my delight when I saw the announcement of Sugar Paper's collaboration with J. Crew.  The collection includes cards, coasters, place cards among other goodies.  I am so thrilled for 2014 to the year of gold!

The House of Gray Malin Photography is one of my favorite photographers. Once I finish decorating my family room, I am going to buy one of his photos for above our sectional.  Until then, I downloaded this free wallpaper.  The images are for iPhones only but I was able to adjust and use for my Droid.

My Current Obsession: Backpacks

My obsession with backpacks started last year.  These backpacks, which have nothing to do with camping (or glamping), are the perfect alternative when you need to carry more than you can squeeze into a crossbody.

Much to the chagrin of my sister-in-law, I bought two last year and have been wearing them on a semi-regular basis. I was starting to feel semi-conscious of my backpack obsession and then I spotted this Chanel bricolage backpack on the last page of VogueA little over two years since the launch of the $39,000 backpack by the Row, this is going to be the year of the backpack.

Bridal Events for the Newly Engaged

Most blogs focus on new year's resolutions in January.  My world, the wedding world, is completely different.  Come January 1st, my phone is ringing and my inbox is full with brides looking for a wedding planner.  My evenings become quickly filled with consultations and bridal events.

If you haven't been to a bridal event, then you are in for a treat.  The events range in size from small to large and usually have a group of wedding vendors that love each other.  The events can be complimentary although some do require a ticket. If there is a cost, then there usually is a great goodie bag!

Another type of bridal event is a trunk show, which focus a dress designer (or for the event listed below, a veil and accessories designer) that will be having an event at a bridal salon. Trunk shows are great for two reasons: the complete line is usually available and there might be a discount or gift given with purchase.

Bridal events, in general, are fabulous. Just stay away from expos.  I'm talking about the huge bridal conventions where all of the vendors pay to get a table.  They are not my cup of tea.

Below are two fun events from vendors that I adore.  Magnificent Milestones is hosting BYOB: Bring Your Own Bridesmaids on Thursday, January 16th.

Bella Bleu will be hosting a Sara Gabriel Trunk Show on Friday, January 17th and Saturday, January 18th.  Bella Bleu is hosting a trunk show featuring. Sara Gabriel can create custom pieces to suit your individual style. I love her headpieces because they are so intricate and detailed!  Enjoy mimosas and sweets as well an additional 10% off your purchase at the trunk show. Set up an appointment with Bella Bleu in advance by calling 847.696.7152.

Current Obsession: Violet Grey

Inspiration can come from many different sources.  I'm currently working on two weddings with wildly different aesthetics (Great Gatsby glamour with Prohibition excess for this one and Barn Chic for the other). I don't just select images related to those projects.  Before I start curating, I focus on getting inspired. I look everywhere and can find inspiration in the most unusual places.

One source that is now on heavy rotation for me is Violet Grey.  I read about the website in Vogue magazine this past fall and then it came up again at LuckyFABB.  My favorite part of the website are the incredibly curated posts of photo shoots along with the tremendous amount of work that goes behind the scenes. I also love that the posts are filed under the name of the make-up artist, not just the star.

On top of these fabulous photo shoot posts, there is also a series of tutorials.  I don't necessarily read the tutorials for the actual how-to, but to find out what products are being used. The products tend to be high end rather than the High/Low mix you might find in most magazines. Violet Grey girls, it seems, follow a money-is-no-object philosophy.

The plan, according to the article in Vogue, is to add an e-commerce site with hard to find beauty products.  I am thrilled for this addition because of my serious obsession with beauty products.  While I get my fix regularly at Sephora and Ulta I have gotten chills from finding a really good product at a pharmacy in France and Boots in the UK.

If you fall down the rabbit hole of Violet Grey, please let me know what you think.  I literally can spend hours there looking at all of the images!

Honey Bee Weddings in CS Brides

I am thrilled to have another wedding featured in the current issue of CS Brides.

The article is available online.  Otherwise, you can head to newsstands to read all about their big day.  Kathleen and Matt's wedding was so beautiful!  I cannot wait to feature their wedding on my blog!

musings #8

I haven't been blogging lately and it's because of pain.  Physical pain. I have tendinitis in my arm and my doctor ordered physical therapy three times a week.  It's not the way that I wanted to start the New Year but I am trying to remain optimistic.

While all of Chicago is suffering with this Arctic weather we are experiencing, I can only dream of warmer weather. The amazing Balmain campaign for Spring Summer 2014 featuring RiRi is nothing short of fabulous and making me count the days until the seasons change.

I wrote a column for the Women's Forum about Winter Weddings: What Every Bride Should Consider.  It was such an honor to be asked to write the article!  Please check it out!

Have you heard of Second City Club?  It's a food and wine club in Chicago. The next event looks to pretty fab and I'm totally bummed that I have a work conflict.  If you are interested in joining, drop me a line.

I have been a fan of Alessandra Branca every since finding her now closed boutique near Water Tower.  She was recently selected to design the Designer Visions 2013 for Elle Decor, which has a great video that shows off the tented dining room (seriously, I'm dying over here) and fabric walls much better than the magazine feature. Dering Hall has the photos from the Elle Decor photo shoot as well as the ability to buy some of the products.
